The Empty Plate (a Meditation) – Thursday, October 15

As a way to help children focus on the problem of hunger, some families have decided to set out an extra plate at their dinner table, and to not serve food on that plate.  In returning thanks for their meal, family members will hold in their hearts the hungry of the world– whose plates are too often empty.

Society of St Andrew Gleaning Day, Saturday, October 17

The Society of St. Andrew’s “Yam Jam” is the annual sweet potato gleaning, spanning 4 Saturdays in October. Last year, 1,100 volunteers gleaned over 75,000 pounds of sweet potatoes from 6 fields! The sweet potatoes get distributed to feeding agencies all over the state of North Carolina. This year, we are hoping to glean more than ever to provide for our neighbors in need. Register for Oct. 17 at endhunger.org/nc-yam-jam, and watch for an email the Tuesday before your gleaning date(s) for general information, and another email on the Friday before your gleaning date(s) for the exact location of the field. We will not know the exact field locations until the week of each event!

Share Your Experience on Social Media #EndHungerNow

When community members participate in these or any other hunger-fighting activities between October 9th and 17th, they are asked to share what they are doing with #EndHungerNow so we can see all the ways the Durham community is coming together to take action and make World Food Day more than just an annual observance.
